Requirements:Successful completion of the module "basics of materials science" is advisable; practical experiences in the fields of manufacturing technologies of metals are helpful.
Objectives:Students know the main groups of engineering materials, their structures and properties. They are able to select metallic materials for specific purposes. In case of problems with materials or materials processing they can define and solve these problems.
The form of the lab course with intensive and autonomous group work requires that the students deal with different communication and working styles in their groups. Accordingly, the students are able to independently apply the basics of classical project management, such as team organization, task planning and division of labor. In this way, they have trained social skills such as teamwork, criticism and communication skills. Furthermore, they have the competence to find solutions to problems and to select the right methods, to conduct research and independent acquisition of knowledge as well as to present and comprehensively document work results.
Contents:Introduction to the properties of metals and alloys: crystal structure, elastic and plastic deformation, microstructure, diffusion, phase diagrams, heat treatment; mechanical testing and properties; ferrous alloys: steels, heat treatment of steel, cast iron; nonferrous alloys: properties and application of aluminium, copper, magnesium, titanium; ceramic materials; polymers: structure and mechanical properties.
Applicability:Compulsory module for this course of studies and an elective module for other study paths.
