Objectives: | The contents of the lecture Physics 2 are the basis for the understanding and the solution of many engineering problems. The students shall be able to understand basic theories of geometrical optics and atomic physics as well as to analyse and to solve problems of wave phenomena and of thermodynamics. Preparation, performing, evaluation and documentation of physical measurements. |

Contents: | Wave theory: One-dimensional harmonical waves (wave equation, phase velocity, reflection, standing waves). Three-dimensional waves, spherical waves. Energy density and energy transport. Superposition of waves, diffraction and interference. Group velocity. Geometrical optics: Reflection, refraction, dispersion. Optical images with mirrors and lenses. Atomic physics: Structure of atoms, simple atomic models of the atom (Bohr, Sommerfeld), structure of the atomic shells, quantum numbers, principles (Pauli principle, minimal energy), radiative transitions. Wave/particle viewpoints. Basic principles of quantum electronics, quantum effects on electronic conductivity, spin phenomena as the basis of future information technology; Principles of nuclear physics: Properties of atomic nuclei and radioactive decay. |

Applicability: | Mandatory module for the Electrical Engineering course and elective mandatory module for other Bachelor courses. |
