Requirements:A successful completion of the modul marine science 1 is advisable.
Objectives:The students have gained profound knowledge of the concepts of physical oceanography. The are familiar with the main equations of hydrodynamics, hydrostatics and kinematics as well as with main concepts and methods in fluid dynamics and oceanography. They are capable of simplifying equations and of applying their knowledge on practical questions in oceanography.
Contents:This module includes the main themes in hydrodynamics and fluid dynamics with relevance to physical oceanography. The major topics are the state variables and properties of sea water, mathematical basis of theoretical oceanography, the main equations in hydrodynamics and the corresponding principles of conservation, specific applications such as the Euler, Bernoullie and Navier-Stokes equations, turbulence and Ekman theory as well as examples for ocean circulation.
Applicability:Compulsory module for this course of studies and an elective module for other study paths.
