Requirements:Successful completion of the modules materials science and manufacturing is advisable.
Objectives:Students are able to analyze and understand processes of corrosion and wear and to select materials and protective measures. They know the most important technologies for improving the properties of surfaces. The students have got basic knowledge of high-temperature and tool materials. They know the main non-destructive testing methods and can use them in the field of quality assurance.
The form of the lab course with intensive and autonomous group work requires that the students deal with different communication and working styles in their groups. Accordingly, the students are able to independently apply the basics of classical project management, such as team organization, task planning and division of labor. In this way, they have trained social skills such as teamwork, criticism and communication skills. Furthermore, they have the competence to find solutions to problems and to select the right methods, to conduct research and independent acquisition of knowledge as well as to present and comprehensively document work results.
Contents:Corrosion: Chemical and electrochemical corrosion, types of corrosion, corrosion protection, materials selection for marine technology. Tribology: friction, wear, lubrication; mechanism of wear. Technology of steel heat treatment : hardenability, surface heat treatment, thermomechanical processes.
High temperature materials. Toolmaterials. Surface improvement technologies. Non destructive testing methods. Materials selection examples and case studies.
Applicability:Compulsory module for this course of studies and an elective module for other study paths.
