Requirements:Successful participation in the module basic principles of information technology is strongly recommended. Formal admission requirements do not exist.
Objectives:After completing the module, participants will be able to design database (D)B models, translate and implement entity relationship models into relational DB designs, reliable handle the fundamental SQL language, and perform basic DB administration tasks. Participants have basic knowledge and experience in dealing with a server-based relational database management system (RDBMS) and associated DB design and administration tools.
Contents:The module databases conveys basic competence in the field of database technology. The lecture first introduces the tasks and the architecture of database systems as well as the conceptual data modeling (entity-relationship model). It covers the fundamentals of the relational data model and the transformation of the conceptual model into the relation model. The database language SQL is fundamentally introduced and used in exercises with a server-based relational database management system (RDBMS). In addition to the methodical knowledge imparted, the participants gain competence in the use of tools for data modeling and in the application of DB administration and query tools.
Applicability:The module is suitable for degree programs that provide skills in the development of IT systems. It can be used as an optional subject for all study programs.
Teaching methods:The module is carried out as a seminar lecture with integrated exercises. The methods are learned and practiced in an application-related context.
