Objectives:The contents of the lecture Physics 2 are the basis for the understanding and the solution of many engineering problems. The students shall be able to understand basic theories of geometrical optics and atomic physics as well as to analyse and to solve problems of wave phenomena and of thermodynamics.
Preparation, performing, evaluation and documentation of physical measurements.
Contents:Wave theory: One-dimensional harmonical waves (wave equation, phase velocity, reflection, standing waves). Three-dimensional waves, spherical waves. Energy density and energy transport. Superposition of waves, diffractionand interference. Group velocity.
Geometrical optics: Reflection, refraction, dispersion. Optical imaging with mirrors and lenses.
Thermodynamics: Thermodynamic systems, thermodynamic state variables. Thermal expansion of solids, fluids and gases. Specific and molar quantities. General equation of states for ideal gases. Introduction to kinetic theory of gases. First law of thermodynamics. Isothermal, isochoric, isobaric, isentropic and polytropic processes. Circle processes.
Atomic physics: Structure of atoms, simple models of the atom (Bohr, Sommerfeld), structure of the atomic shell, quantum numbers, principles (Pauli principle, minimal energy), radiative transitions. Wave/particle viewpoints. Uncertainty principle.
Experiments concerning the course contents of Physics I and Physics II.
