Objectives:At the end of the modul students are able to understand the advantages and fields of application of lasers in medicine as well as the construction of medical laser systems. They can explain the basics of optics and the generation of laser radiation as well as classify the different types of laser beam sources. The students can describe the most important processes of laser beam machining in medicine and can compare the advantages and process limits. They can sketch the structure of the system technology of laser material processing systems. The students can illustrate the interaction processes between laser radiation and tissue for disease treatment. They can quote the main areas of application of lasers for disease treatment.
Course contents:Introduction to laser technology (physical basics, laser beam generation, optical components), overview of the main processes of laser beam machining to produce (laser based additive manufacturing of metals and plastic materials) and machining (laser polishing, laser marking, laser ablation) of medical devices and implants as well as laser-tissue interactions for disease treatment (dermatology, dentistry, ophthalmology)
