Exam requirements:Basic knowledge of metals and alloys, phase-diagrams (two-component systems) and their practical applications. Detailed knowledge of the Fe-C/Fe3C phase diagram, the microstructures of steels and cast irons and the resulting properties. Basic knowledge about heat treatment of metallic materials, especially annealing and hardening of steels and the precipitation hardening of Al-alloys.
Objectives:Students know the main groups of engineering materials, their structures and properties. They are able to select materials for specific purposes, in case of problems with materials or materials processing they can define and solve these problems.
Course contents:Introduction to the properties of metals and alloys: crystal structure, elastic and plastic deformation, microstructure, diffusion, phase diagrams, heat treatment of steels an non-iron-alloys.
