Objectives:course objectives are exercises in design process procedures during the development process of electronic products by means of considering the basics of design safety in hard- and software.

Both course clusters are using practical examples to give the student the necessary skills introducing safety aspects into the development process electronics.

Developing a mechanic or electronic design , a software programm or a production process following usual rules can comprise hidden faults which can be detected only by means of the knowledgement of hidden influences – considering these is a guaranty for a safe design in electronics.

The student develops the sensitivity for critical design correlations and is able to take prevantative procedures already during the early phase of the product development process.
Course contents:safety related electronics has to have robustness not only against all kinds of conceivable disturbances but also against operating errors, the possibility of single or double faults - in exremely safety related electronics muliple faults must not have any influence on the safety of the respective device.
Therefore the course gives a lot of instructions in using redundant possibilities applying different technologies for a safe electronic design.

part 1 of the course comprises the hardware cluster with the following topics

- customer`s query and safety aspects
- concept determination
- fisibility analysis
- concept`s structural plan , organisation, responsibility
- product development process
- ISO 26262
- robustness validation (ZVEI – proposal)
- V – model
- gate-process, time schedule
- risk management, change management, legislations,responsibility
- specifications
- electronic component´s databank, special characteristics of electonic components
- storage stability of electronic components (ZVEI)
- methods : FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis)
- fuse protection, automatic switch off protection
- grounding problems (lay out rules)
- connector problems in multi voltage circuits when connecting during “power on mode”
- the production process electronics
- testability
- long term availability of electronic components versus safety

part 2 of the course comprises the software cluster with the following topics


1. what is the influence of software on electronics?
2. knowledge transfer of “design safety for hardware “ to “design safety for software”
3. software development using the SPICE and CMM standards
4. practical example of a customer related software project
