Exam requirements:Extensive knowledge of important forms and structures of English grammar; disposal of a reliable extended vocabulary; reading and listening comprehension of texts of intermediate to advanced level of difficulty; extensive knowledge and skills in correct written language production, inclusive of formalised text production such as correspondence;.
Objectives:Creating awareness of more complex grammatical structures of the English language as well as structures in contrast to other languages; acquisition of a reliable extended and specific vocabulary; Confidence in the situationally adequate application of grammatical forms and lexical units; inferential understanding of texts of a more demanding nature; mostly independent language production; independence in building up vocabulary and in learning grammatical structures
Course contents:Creating awareness and exercising of important forms and structures of the English language, (especially those prone to mistake due to language interferences) like the passive voice, complex sentences;
Systematic acquisition of a reliable extended vocabulary, particularly in the semantic fields of technology, engineering sciences, natural sciences (so-called sub-technicals like vocabulary used for describing measurements, weights, logical connections); activation of potential vocabulary by application of morphological rules (affixation, changes in word class); verbal descriptions of graphic representations;
Rendering, (re-)structuring, summarizing and commenting of texts in the target language; Grammatically, situationally and idiomatically correct use of language; Reading and listening comprehension of increasingly authentic texts taken from technology, natural sciences and the economy; Formalised written correspondence (offers; descriptions of products)
Literature:Textmaterialien werden in den Lehrveranstaltungen ausgegeben; Studenten sollten mit der Benutzung üblicher Grammatiken, sowie bi- und monolingualer Wörterbücher vertraut sein. Auf geeignete Literatur zum eigenständigen Wortschatzaufbau wird in der Lehrveranstaltung verwiesen. ------------- Texts will be issued during classes; students are expected to be familiar with referring to commonly used grammar books, as well as mono- and bilingual dictionaries. Suitable literature for an independent acquisition of vocabulary will be recommended during classes.
