Course: biotechnology

Course no. :n/a
ECTS credits:3
Lecturer(s):Prof. Dr. rer. nat. J. Schallenberg
Available: winter term summer term
Course type:Lecture/practical exercises
Exam type:Written e. 1,5h or oral examine
Exam requirements:Basic knowledge about the most important biochemical pathways and microbial growth. Demand for nutrients. Deepened knowledge about growth kinetics, batch and continuous fermentation. Oxygen supply and fermentation systems. Knowledge about different production processes. Biological methods of removal of pollutants in sewage water, soil, and air. Molecular genetics, enzyme technology.
Objectives:Based on the knowledge in chemistry and microbiology the fundamentals of biotechnology are provided. Bacterial metabolism, microbial growth and fermentation are discussed regarding environmental biotechnology. Increased information in environmental biotechnology and brief knowledge about several biotechnological processes in environment is given in this lecture.
Course contents:Microbial metabolism is further discussed with regard to energy generation. Growth and increase of microbial cells in batch and continuous cultures is the basis for different fermentation processes. The knowledge in oxygen supply and mixing of fermentation broth prepare the students for different production processes. Some processes in environmental biotechnology are discussed. In environmental biotechnology the topics wastewater treatment, methane production, composting and biological air cleaning are discussed. Special subjects are bioremediation, leaching and monitoring. An overview of enzyme technology and molecular genetics is given.
